The benefits of whey protein are well known, so well known in fact it is the most commonly consumed supplement globally. Despite its popularity though many consumers don’t know what type of protein they are consuming.
The two most common types of whey protein are whey protein isolate and whey protein concentrate, but what’s the difference?
Well in fact both types of protein come from the same source, they are both the byproducts of making cheese. The difference between the two is that whey protein isolate goes through additional levels of processing and filtration. These additional steps remove additional lactose, fats and carbohydrates, the end result creates a higher density protein content.
How can I tell which whey protein I have?
There are two common types of protein on the market, single type proteins or protein blends.
Protein blends are made up of a variety of different types of proteins. The problem is that consumers don’t know what percentage of each protein it contains, it could be the case that the protein is mainly made majority of whey protein concentrate with only a small amount of the (more expensive to manufacture and higher quality) whey protein isolate.
Single types of protein – in most cases is pure whey protein isolate, is referred to as ‘premium protein’ to many supplement brands. This often means being sold at a higher price tag to whey protein blends.
Why do we only use whey protein isolate?
We choose to specifically only stock whey protein isolate for a few reasons;
- It’s a higher quality protein – the additional levels of filtration remove more lactose making it easier on the gut for people.
- Mixes smoother – after extensive testing we found undoubtedly that whey protein isolate mixes better with other supplements, ensuring that you don’t get clumpy shakes.
- Full transparency – We are putting an end to ‘protein blends’.
- Better prices – a smaller range of proteins allows us to make larger volumes of whey protein isolate, giving you higher quality protein at better prices
